Your First Fencing Class: What to Expect at Pulse Fencing

Curious about fencing but not sure what happens in a lesson? You do not need to know the rules, own a weapon or have tried the sport before. Our beginner classes at Pulse Fencing are designed for people with little or no fencing experience.

Here is a practical guide to getting started at our club in Auckland CBD.

You will start with the basics

Beginner training introduces the skills that make fencing work: footwork, blade control, attacking and defending, rules and basic tactics. There is plenty to learn, so give yourself permission to be a beginner. Understanding how to stand, move and control your blade matters more than trying to do everything quickly.

As you learn, you will begin to see that fencing involves decisions as well as movement. You are learning to judge distance, recognise an opportunity and respond to another fencer. Ask questions when something is unfamiliar; you are not expected to arrive knowing fencing terminology.

Equipment is provided

All necessary fencing equipment is provided for our beginner classes. You do not need to buy a mask, jacket or weapon before your first session. Starting with club equipment gives you time to discover the sport before choosing your own gear.

What should you bring?

  • Clean sports shoes suitable for moving around indoors.
  • Comfortable athletic trousers and clothing you can move in.
  • A water bottle.
  • Any questions you have about starting fencing.

If you are unsure about clothing or have a particular participation requirement, contact our team before attending so we can discuss it with you.

Choose a session and sign up first

Pulse offers beginner classes on Wednesdays and Fridays, with different sessions for younger children and older beginners, including adults. Spaces are limited, so please complete the first-time sign-up form before coming along.

Our beginner class page has the current session times, prices and sign-up form. After you submit it, our team will contact you with the details you need to get started. During your first session, we will help you set up GymMaster for future bookings and payments.

Where to find us

Our club is at Level 2, 76 Anzac Avenue, Auckland CBD. Check the contact and location page when planning your visit. Attend at your booked class time: training sessions and shop opening hours are different.

What comes after the first lesson?

Learning a new sport takes repetition. We recommend completing at least eight beginner classes before progressing to an intermediate class. Progression depends on individual development, and your coach will let you know when you are ready. You are welcome to continue beginner classes to build confidence and practise.
