From Beginner to Club Fencer: Your Next Steps

Once the basic movements begin to feel familiar, it is natural to wonder what comes next. Progressing in fencing is about building a foundation you can use confidently, rather than simply completing a set number of lessons.

Let your coach guide the move

At Pulse, we recommend at least eight beginner classes before progressing to intermediate training. This is a guideline, not an automatic graduation date. Your coach will consider your individual development and let you know when you are ready.

You are welcome to keep attending beginner sessions for more practice. Repeating familiar exercises can help you understand them better and become more consistent.

Look for small, useful improvements

Think about the skills you are practising: moving with control, judging distance, handling the blade and understanding the rules. Ask your coach what one or two things would be most useful to work on next.

After a session, jot down a short reminder in your own words. A specific focus, such as understanding an exercise you found difficult, is easier to act on than a general aim to “get better”.

Choose a sustainable training routine

Explore our class programme with your coach before changing sessions. The right next class should suit your experience and the skills you are developing.

Choose a routine you can attend consistently alongside school, work or other commitments. You do not need to copy another fencer’s schedule. Private coaching is also listed on our classes page if you would like to discuss more individual guidance.

Review membership when you know your routine

Our membership page explains the current options, pricing and common questions. Compare the options with the sessions you actually plan to attend, and ask the team if you are unsure which arrangement fits.

Use GymMaster for future bookings and payments once your account is set up. Check your bookings rather than assuming a change of class or membership automatically reserves a place.

Discuss equipment before buying

Beginner equipment is provided, but ask what you will need as you move into your next stage. Your coach can help you distinguish immediate requirements from purchases that can wait. Fit and compatibility matter more than matching another fencer’s kit.

Keep your goals personal

You may enjoy learning a new skill, training regularly or exploring competition. You do not need to decide your whole pathway at once. Talk with your coach about what interests you and agree on a manageable next step.

Ask the Pulse team about your next class, or review our training options.
