What Should You Wear to Your First Fencing Lesson?

You have decided to try fencing. The next question is usually a practical one: what should you wear? For your first beginner session at Pulse Fencing, you do not need to arrive with a fencing uniform or your own weapon.

We provide the necessary fencing equipment for beginner classes. Your job is to bring suitable clothing for moving around, clean sports shoes and a water bottle.

Wear long trousers or trackpants

Shorts are not suitable. Wear long trousers or trackpants that cover your legs and let you bend your knees, step forwards and backwards, and move without pulling or restriction. Trying a few comfortable steps at home is a useful way to check whether your clothes allow movement.

Ordinary sports clothing is what you wear underneath the protective equipment supplied for class; it is not a replacement for fencing protection. If you are unsure about a particular item, ask us before attending.

Bring clean sports shoes

Choose clean sports shoes suitable for indoor movement. Make sure they fit securely and fasten properly. You do not need to buy specialist fencing shoes just to try your first beginner lesson.

Bring the shoes you plan to use, rather than assuming every type of casual footwear will suit the session. Contact the club if you need advice before your visit.

Keep your first-session bag simple

  • Comfortable sports clothing and long trousers or trackpants. Shorts are not suitable.
  • Clean indoor sports shoes.
  • A water bottle.
  • Your booking information and any questions for the coach.

You can leave equipment shopping until you have tried fencing and spoken with a coach about what you will need next.

Ask about fit before starting

Tell the coach if supplied equipment feels uncomfortable or restricts your movement. Do not quietly carry on with something that seems wrong. Learning how your equipment should fit is part of getting started.

If you have a particular clothing or participation requirement, contact Pulse before your session so we can discuss it.

Book before you arrive
